This treatment reduces excess gum tissue for cosmetic or clinical purposes.
Crown lengthening is a minor procedure performed by a dental surgeon or periodontist (a dentist specialising in gum health). It reduces the size of a person’s gums, exposing more tooth structure for either cosmetic or clinical reasons.
A person might be offered crown lengthening if they are self-conscious about their excess gum tissue. Alternatively, if a person has a cavity that is below the gum line, crown lengthening may be used to grant your dentist access to the affected area.
A patient may also be offered the procedure if a broken or decayed tooth is preventing a restoration from being properly fitted.
Your dental surgeon will use a local anaesthetic during the procedure to prevent you from experiencing pain. Any discomfort following your crown lengthening treatment can be eased with over-the-counter painkillers.
