Beaumont Dental also offers sedation to any patients who are especially nervous. Sedation can reduce anxiety, allowing for appointments and treatments to be carried out with minimal stress.
Sedation is especially helpful for nervous patients. It can also be beneficial for those with a low pain threshold or a strong gag reflex. In addition, sedation may be offered to anyone undergoing lengthy or complex treatment, which is likely to be uncomfortable due to the extended amount of time required in the chair.
Beaumont Dental offers two forms of sedation to patients — oral sedation and IV sedation. Oral sedation is where the patient is given a pill to make them feel more at ease.
IV sedation is where the patient receives a sedative intravenously (through a vein), which relaxes them throughout their treatment. For nervous adults, this is the most likely solution.
Sedation makes you sleepy and induces a sense of deep relaxation. It is unlikely that sedation will put you fully to sleep, however, you must have someone to take you home after treatment. You must also avoid alcohol for 24 hours before and after sedation, and you cannot drive for 24 hours.
